What is WAFA?
The World Association of Flower Arrangers organized in 1981 is a non-profit, non-partisan organization of mostly amateur flower arrangers representing thirty countries. The purpose of WAFA is to provide an international forum for the exchange of ideas about flower arranging; to promote the care and conservation of our natural resources and the environment; and to organize educational events.
The governance of the organization moves from country to country every three years. The country in charge establishes a committee of nine directors, each responsible for a part of the International Seminar, the Triennial Meeting, and The World Flower Show.
The United States is the current manager and will put on the 10th World Show in Boston June 15-19, 2011. The flower arranging groups of The Garden Club of America and The National Garden Clubs, Inc. have come together to form the WAFA USA group under which a management committee is working to raise the necessary funds and volunteers to entertain and educate our forty to fifty thousand national and international visitors.
The World Show with its six hundred flower arranging entries also carries a trade show with many vendors from around the world presenting their wares. There will be numerous lectures given by prominent speakers in their field not only about flower arranging but also about The United States, her land, and her history. There will also be major national and international on-stage flower arranging demonstrations.
The group of men and women who make up the WAFA organization are active in their own fields of endeavor, many of them very prominently involved in the diplomatic life of their countries. Others are active in their garden clubs and are not only flower arrangers, but also horticulturalists and ardent conservationists who make a difference in the environment and the lands in which they live.
The United States is honored to be the host country from 2008 to 2011. The management committee has a mission to promote and support floral art through education and to cultivate a deeper sense of The United States of America. It is our hope that those who come to the 10th World Show – “This Glorious Earth” - in June of 2011 will take away with them a broader understanding of our country, our people, and the art of flower arranging.
